KASARAGOD ARCHITECTURE Pt.1

There's still a good lot of buildings from a bygone age that have so far survived the developers in Kasaragod, here's a few I've found whilst reconnoitring the municipality.

Entrance to government school building. MG road.

An adjacent classroom.

Entrance to advocates offices. Nayaks road.

Church of South India. MG road.

Apartment above hotel Sri Venkatramana Bhavan. STV road.

Once a private family home this beautiful house is now rented rooms.

KERALA AGRICULTURE Pt. 1

Rubber

Scoring the bark of the tree allows the milky juice to flow into collection cups. This all happens early in the morning while sap is rising, here the harvester has tipped the pots and taken the liquid back to the mill.

The latex is formed into mats that are milled through a mangle and hung to dry in the sun ready to go for further processing.

Arecanut

The Areca or Betelnut has an intoxicating effect when chewed. The tall trees grow up to 25 metres in hight.

Clusters of nuts form high up in the canopy, harvesters climb one tree then swing their weight to bend the flexible trunks over to the next tree. I'm waiting to catch this on film.

Tobacco

Agriculturalists tending the crop, the flowering tops must be removed to encourage vegetive growth and inhibit the plants from going to seed.

The dried and cured leaves at Kasaragod market.

Warning:

Smoking and chewing tobacco products is injurious to health.

SHOPS Pt.1

At the private bus station this shop-cum-cloakroom fills the air with sweet aroma.

Hassan the banana man has a well established shop on MG road. He supplies for my friend Hameed at Al-Ameen store.

At Padinyar, just over the river from Chembirika this fantastic little emporium is only five minutes walk from the beach.

Engineering shop where electric motors are rewound and commutators checked for sparking, there's a firework outlet next door.

My friends Hameed and son Shafi run AL-AMEEN store in Chembirika pictured here with Ameen grandson of Hameed.

RECLAIM YARD

Opposite my room at Century Park lodge is a second hand wood and furniture outlet.

These alcove cupboards are all solid hardwood and have been reclaimed from old houses in the area.

Workers having a mackle. Solid barred windows made from teakwood.

Old style windows. They are medieval in design compared to Everest.

CHEMBIRIKA TUNNEL

There's only one railway tunnel in all Kerala, built in 1905 it remains in use today. At 161.4 meters it takes a while to walk through.

It is an offence punishable by law to walk on the tracks, but traditionally used by pedestrians as a shortcut to the neighbouring village of Kizhur, this practice continues to be a hazardous danger.

Don't walk through tunnels it's a shortcut to death.

RJB LIONS

A last minute sponsorship deal for a local 20:20 one day cricket event got my team stickered on the banner.

Some great trophies are up for grabs here.

Meeting and greeting the team lineup was a pleasurable duty, the lions are roaring to go.

A little bit of action soon sorts out the oppositions wicket keeper.

RJB Lions won their first match then sadly lost miserably the next three but this fine chap Udaif scored 135 runs and took a trophy for best bats man.

Know your Silly Midd-on and Silly Midd-off positions.

JOURNEY MAN

Meet journey man, self styled and on a mission.

Only one wheel on his bike this guy was a pleasure to meet.

Probably a little bit crazy (as am I)

He took great pleasure in showing me what he had caged in his box.
